Mike Box, from Hattiesburg, received a BA degree in art from Mississippi State University and a Master of Art Education degree from The University of Southern Mississippi. After a career of teaching art at Pearl High School, Mike retired in May 2007. He served as president of the Mississippi Art Education Association. He was selected as Mississippi Art Educator of The Year in 1992. Mike feels very privileged to have been a part of the Pearl School District’s Fine Art Department when it received a Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts in 2005.
     Before beginning his teaching and art career he served on active Duty in the army for eight years as both an enlisted and officer. Upon completion of ROTC at Mississippi State University in 1977, Mike was named Distinguished Military Graduate and commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Regular Army. He was stationed in the Panama Canal Zone, Nuernberg, Germany and Ft McClellan, Alabama. When he resigned his commission he had attained the rank of Captain. .
    Mike’s earlier artwork could be classified as classical realism in oils. More recently he has been concentrating on abstracts and watercolor. How light and form create a believable sense of presence have always and will continue to be a primary focus of his artwork.
